    Stephen Moylan, an Irish immigrant from Cork who became acting Secretary to George Washington – the first President of the United States – coining the phrase ‘United States of America’ in a letter dated January 2, 1776. 

    Until now, the earliest documented use of the phrase dates back to an anonymous newspaper article published in the Virginia Gazette, in April 1776.

    A separated mother-of-two from Ennis, who cried in court as a county registrar granted a repossession order to KBC Bank for her family home. The woman told the Clare Registrar’s Court that KBC Bank “should have done their homework before handing my then husband €210,000 because he was a compulsive gambler at the time”.
